thoughts on politics.....

Does Republican= Christian and Democrat = athiest/liberal??? Background: when I was 18, I registered as a republican because that's what my mom was and that was about all the information I needed at the time to make my choice. Or so I thought. Then I went through my early 20's not even giving politics a thought. Didn't even vote....

Fast forward to my late 20's until present time and here I am wondering why in the world I am a republican!! When I think of the Republican party, I think of greed, corruption, homophobia, mob-like tactics and a false alliance with right winged Christian believers. And yes, I remember Monica Lewinksy and how can I forget the recent news about John Edwards. (I don't think marital infidelity is privy only to the Democratic party.)

So, is this really about abortion and gay marriage? If so, then the Republican party has done a fantastic job tricking us Christians into thinking that it is ALL about these issues. I firmly believe you can be democrat and against abortion. I'm against abortion. What I am NOT against, is a person's right to choose. Even if abortion were outlawed, women would still be making that choice.... God gives us choices, that is why we needed Jesus. If we never had to make a choice then why even have the need for salvation?

The Republican party really seems to be about war/fight first talk later, about deregulation the market, about privatizing EVERYTHING, outsourcing American jobs, etc. I don't relate to this.

The Democratic party tends to lean more toward helping the poor, the sick, the vets, the elderly, the middle class. I like this about the Democratic party. I relate to that.

I need to get out of politics..... ;-)

First, JOSH IS A BEATUY ... in a manly way! Congrats!
Concerning the politics of it all: Lori! You sound just a little jaded! A bit cynical! Honestly, I think I am even more calloused than you. I look at both parties and think "They're both so agenda-driven!" When I vote, I will vote for the less of two weevils. I don't think the Republicans are war mongers; I just think that's the perception the Democrats WANT us to have. Nor do I think the Dems are any more or less concerned about the poor; those are their words but their actions speak louder to me than their words.
That being said, I'm not bitter about it and I'm not going to let any of these folks lead me blindly off. Rather, my obligation is to vote my conscience, and live with integrity under WHOMEVER is the next president, because THEY are not responsible to treat the downtrodden with respect and dignity, I AM. THEY are not responsible for the poor, I AM. I choose this country over any other one on the planet! As screwed up as we are, I still prefer what's happening here! I do my best work under God's leadership and not ANY politician! THEY makes me fearful and paranoid. HE makes me hopeful and healthy!

I think it's interesting that this whole entry started with a Christian vs. non-christian stance. I know plenty of christians that are dems and plenty of non-christians that are reps. My own grandmother was a STRONG democrat. Her nephew (my 2nd cousin) is one of the major supporters of the democrats (and he's an oil tycoon - go figure).
Have lots more to say, but leaving it at that. I second Kevin's response.

Thanks, T. I am not so naive as to think that I am right on this issue. I am more than anything, confused!! I'd love to hear any and all comments you may have. I have a suspicion that I need to turn off my talk radio and listen with my own ears, eh?

I think I just get used to hearing the pundits and the talk radio people catagorizing the two parties based on religion. Which is why the original post.
